Kolkata doctor rape-murder case highlights: ED detains close aide of ex-principal Sandip Ghosh

Senior TMC leader Derek O’Brien on Friday, September 6 questioned the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the status of the charge-sheet in the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday detained Prasun Chattopadhyay, a data entry operator at the Calcutta National Medical College and a known proximate of arrested ex-RG Kar hospital principal Sandip Ghosh, in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the latter institution, an officer said.

Chattopadhyay, who allegedly used to identify himself as “Ghosh’s PA”, was also spotted amid the crowd from the purported August 9 video at the RG Kar hospital seminar hall crime scene where the murdered trainee doctor’s body was discovered.- PTI

Kolkata Police detain Congress party workers protesting against R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital rape-murder case

BJP MP Sambit Patra says, “The questions that the victim’s father has laid in front of the nation today are of paramount importance... Question No. 1, the victim’s father says that when the body of the victim was in their house, then DC North offered him money. He refused the offer...An administrator tried to offer him money.”

The West Bengal BJP organises a statewide “Chakka jam” (road blockade) programme in several parts of the city and districts for an hour demanding justice for the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case and also the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

As part of the protest, BJP workers burn tyres at multiple locations and shout slogans seeking justice for the victim and the resignation of the Chief Minister, who also holds the health and home department portfolios.

In Kolkata, protesters blocked roads in areas like Shyambazar, Lake Town, VIP Road, Salt Lake, Karunamoyee, Behala, and Rajpur, among others from 1 pm to 2 pm.

Enforcement Directorate officials detain Prashun Chatterjee, a close aide of former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh, from Subhashgram in Kolkata.?

Following a seven-hour operation, Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials have detained Prashun Chatterjee from his residence in the De Para area of Subhashgram. Mr. Chatterjee, a close associate of Sandip Ghosh, was also seen in a viral video from the seminar hall at RG Kar.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla says”...Parents (of the victim) told us about how the police were offering them a bribe, cremation was hurried up...Parents were told to record the video as Kolkata police put pressure on the parents.”

Senior TMC leader Derek O’Brien questions CBI regarding the status of the charge sheet in the R.G. Kar hospital rape-murder case.

“When is CBI filing a charge-sheet in the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case and putting the accused on trial? When?” he writes on X.

For the past few days, the TMC has been demanding that the CBI file the charge sheet at the earliest.

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh says that President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah should look into the crimes against women happening across the country.

The TMC leader further claimed that on average 90 such cases take place in the country everyday. He says “A minimum of 90 brutal crimes against women are happening on average, daily. The union HM and the president must look into it,”.?

Supreme Court refuses to entertain former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh against Calcutta High Court decision ordering CBI probe into graft case against him.?

Congress leader Rashid Alvi accuses BJP leaders of trying to malign the West Bengal State government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

He says, “CBI is doing the inquiry. The culprit has been arrested. The Supreme Court is supervising it under its direction and observation. I would say to the BJP leaders who are putting forth their findings to malign the State government to start conducting their own court. BJP leaders have this habit of demeaning opposition leaders,”.?

Union MoS and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar allege that TMC is trying to hide the incident since the beginning, and they are trying to tamper with evidence.

He says, “We have been saying this from the start that TMC has been trying to hide the entire incident. This has been their plan, and they even tried to prove that it is a suicide. They tried to tamper with the evidence.”?

Mr. Majumdar adds, “The letter proves that the incident happened on August 9, and on August 10, a notification was released from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. This notification, without the involvement of the State health ministry, was not possible to release that kind of order...She (Mamata Banerjee) should resign,”.?

Amidst raging protests over the rape and murder of a doctor at the R. G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, the victim’s parents and family members, who joined protests at the hospital on Wednesday (September 4, 2024) night, alleged that the police had offered them money even as the body of their daughter was lying at home.

“The police offered us money when the body of our daughter was lying at home. Is this the humanity of the police,” the aunt of the victim told reporters at the hospital on Wednesday night.

ED conducts a raid and registered a PMLA case in the financial irregularities case. Mr. Ghosh is presently in the custody of CBI.

On Supreme Court hearing in RG Kar Medical College & Hospital rape-murder case, West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh says, “Hearing was scheduled to be held on 5th September, why is it being delayed? The entire nation’s eyes are on this, it is such a major incident. Be it the Court or CBI, this should be taken seriously. People are agitating for this. They trust the Court, so it should be as viewed as such.”
