UN chief Antonio Guterres called Wednesday for an end to the “sickening cycle of escalation” in the Middle East, while specifically condemning Iran over its latest missile attack after facing harsh criticism from Israel.

The secretary-general was speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, called after Iran on Tuesday launched a massive missile barrage at Israel, which has ramped up its offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

“It is high time to stop the sickening cycle of escalation after escalation that is leading the people of the Middle East straight over the cliff,” the UN chief said.- AFP

Hezbollah said it repelled an Israeli infiltration into southern Lebanon on Wednesday (October 2, 2024) as Israel reported eight soldiers were killed — its first losses since launching cross-border raids this week.

The clashes came hours after Iran launched its largest missile attack yet on Israel, its sworn enemy. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Tehran would pay for its “big mistake”.

Jordan’s top diplomat Ayman Safadi warned Israel and Iran on Wednesday that the country will “defend itself with all its capabilities against any threat” after Iranian missiles fired at Israel breached the kingdom’s airspace.

“Jordan will not be anyone’s battlefield,” Safadi said in a phone call with his British counterpart David Lammy, according to a ministry statement.

The country would “defend itself with all its capabilities against any threat to its security, its stability and the safety of its citizens”, he added, saying “Jordan has clearly informed Iran and Israel of this stance”.

President Joe Biden says he will not support an Israeli attack on sites related to Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“The answer is no,” Biden said Wednesday, when asked if he would support such retaliation after Iran fired about 180 missiles at Israel on Tuesday.

Biden’s comments came after he and fellow Group of Seven leaders spoke by phone on Wednesday to discuss coordinating new sanctions against Iran.

The White House said in a statement that the G7 leaders “unequivocally condemned Iran’s attack against Israel” and Biden reiterated the United States’ “full solidarity and support to Israel and its people.” All the while, the administration has signalled that it’s urging that Israel display restraint in how it responds to Tuesday’s missile attack, which Biden said was “ineffective and defeated.”

Israel’s foreign minister said that he was barring U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres from entering the country because he had not “unequivocally” condemned Iran’s missile attack on Israel.

Iran fired more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel amid an escalation in fighting between Israel and its proxy in Lebanon, Hezbollah. Many were intercepted in flight but some penetrated missile defences.

The armed wing of Hamas claimed responsibility for a shooting and stabbing attack that killed seven people in Israeli commercial hub Tel Aviv the previous day.

“The Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades takes responsibility for the heroic Jaffa operation carried out by the fighters from the (occupied West Bank) city of Hebron,” the group said in a statement, referring to the attack that took place near the Tel Aviv light rail station in Jaffa on Tuesday.

Germany said it had organised a second military flight to evacuate its nationals from Lebanon, after Israel launched ground raids into its neighbour and Iran fired missiles at Israel.

An Airbus A330 MRTT departed for Beirut to pick up 130 German nationals considered “particularly vulnerable”, Germany’s foreign and defence ministries said in a joint statement.

The special flight was also carrying some 5,000 kilograms (11,000 pounds) of relief supplies from the German Red Cross, mainly medical supplies such as infusion equipment and bandages, “to provide emergency care for Lebanon’s civilian population”.

Israel’s army chief said that Iran had fired about 200 missiles on Israel the previous day, updating an earlier figure of 180 reported by the military.

“Iran launched approximately 200 missiles at the state of Israel yesterday,” Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi said in a statement. Iranian state TV had earlier said 200 missiles were fired at Israel.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency advised all European airlines to avoid Iranian airspace, following an Iranian attack against Israel.

“In view of the Iranian attack against Israel on October 1, 2024, and Israel’s announcement of its intention to retaliate,” the advisory warned carriers “not to perform flights in the airspace of Iran at all flight levels,” EASA said.?

“The recommendation is valid until October 31, 2024 and can be reviewed earlier, and adapted or withdrawn, subject to the revised assessment.”

France’s embassy in Iran recommended that French nationals who are permanent residents in the country should leave temporarily once international air traffic resumes, because of heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The message from the embassy, which also urged French nationals visiting Iran to leave immediately, is similar to messages given earlier this year when tensions increased between Iran and Israel.

Lebanon’s caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati said Lebanon was in need of a ceasefire to end intensified hostilities between Israel and armed group Hezbollah, saying around 1.2 million across Lebanon had been displaced by Israeli attacks.

“Stop fighting. We don’t need more blood. We don’t need more destruction,” Mikati said in a briefing organized by the American Task Force for Lebanon, a U.S.-based lobby group. “There is an immediate need for a ceasefire,” he added.?

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Hezbollah leader Syyed Hassan Nasrallah to flee Lebanon days before he was killed in an Israeli strike and is now deeply worried about Israeli infiltration of senior government ranks in Tehran, three Iranian sources said.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack on Hezbollah’s booby-trapped pagers on Sept. 17, Khamenei sent a message with an envoy to beseech the Hezbollah secretary general to leave for Iran, citing intelligence reports that suggested Israel had operatives within Hezbollah and was planning to kill him, one of the sources, a senior Iranian official, told Reuters.

The messenger, the official said, was a senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander, Brigadier General Abbas Nilforoushan, who was with Nasrallah in his bunker when it was hit by Israeli bombs and was also killed.

The statement also cited the July killing of Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, and Israel’s attacks on Lebanon. Israel has not claimed responsibility for Haniyeh’s death.

“Iran risks setting the entire region ablaze,” he said in comments on social media platform X.

Police in Denmark and Sweden said they were probing explosions and gunfire around Israeli embassies in their capitals which took place amid spiralling Middle East tensions.

In Denmark, police said three Swedish nationals had been arrested after two blasts were reported in the “immediate proximity” of the Israeli embassy in Copenhagen in the early hours of Wednesday.

Swedish said the Israeli embassy in Stockholm had been targeted in a shooting on Tuesday just before 6:00 pm (1600 GMT).

No injuries were reported from the incidents but both came amid heightened international fears as Iran fired missiles at Israel which has vowed to respond to the attack.

Former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett called for a decisive strike to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities after the Islamic republic fired a barrage of missiles at Israel.

“We must act now to destroy Iran’s nuclear program, its central energy facilities, and to fatally cripple this terrorist regime,” Mr. Bennett wrote on X just hours after the attack on Israel.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said its fighters were clashing with Israeli troops who had “infiltrated” a southern border village, while the Lebanese army said Israeli soldiers had made a brief incursion into the south.

It is the first time the Iran-backed group has announced such fighting on Lebanese soil since the start of an escalation last week when the Israeli army began pounding south Lebanon and later killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an air strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Delhi Police has beefed up security around the Israel Embassy in Tughlak Road area after the tension increased in the middle east.

A senior Delhi Police officer said the checking has been intensified with the deployment of more security personnel around the Israel Embassy located at Tughlak Road area.

The officer said a multi-layered security has already been put in place with several CCTV cameras installed around both structures as the embassy has witnessed blasts twice earlier, though no one was injured in any of the incidents.

Swedish police said on Wednesday that a shooting had occurred at the Israeli embassy Stockholm the day before, adding that no-one was hurt and that an investigation had been opened.

In the wake of the escalating tensions in West Asia, India on Wednesday advised its citizens to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran.

In an advisory, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also urged the Indian nationals presently residing in Iran to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran.

“We are deeply concerned at the escalation of security situation in West Asia and reiterate our call for restraint by all concerned and protection of civilians. It is important that the conflict doesn’t take a wider regional dimension and we urge that all issues be addressed through dialogue and diplomacy,” the MEA issued a statement on Wednesday.

“Indian nationals are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to Iran. Those currently residing in Iran are requested to remain vigilant and stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Tehran,” the Ministry of External Affairs said.

France said on Wednesday it was sending additional military resources to the Middle East to tackle the Iranian threat and convened a United Nations Security Council meeting for later in the day after Tehran launched a barrage of missiles at Israel.

At least 32 people have been killed in Israeli strikes in southern Gaza killed at least 32 people overnight and into Wednesday, Palestinian medical officials said.

The European Hospital in the hard-hit city of Khan Younis said it received the bodies after heavy Israeli airstrikes and ground operations in the city. It said the dead include several women and children, and that dozens of people were wounded.

Top European airlines Lufthansa, KLM and Swiss on Tuesday (October 1, 2024) announced that they were extending their suspension of flights to the Middle East, as tensions spiral throughout the region.?

KLM has pushed out until the end of the year the suspension of its once-daily flight to Tel Aviv “given the situation in the region”, spokeswoman Elvira van der Vis told AFP.?

Japan’s new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Wednesday that missile attacks by Iran on Israel were “unacceptable”.
