John Mayer Believes Dead & Co. Loves the Music So Much They Will Play More Shows

Noted Deadhead Andy Cohen took the opportunity to put John Mayer in the hot seat and get an answer on whether Dead & Co.’s purported final tour this summer will indeed be their last.

On Watch What Happens Live Monday, Oct. 2, Cohen enlisted some devoted fans to ask Mayer about the future of Dead & Co., to which the guitarist responded: “We will play shows — I have to believe that we love this music so much we’re gonna play the shows. We just are trying to figure out what that looks like for the future. But everyone has it in their hearts to keep playing.”

Cohen then threw out an idea that seemed hard to turn down even on the spot: “Two weeks at the Sphere. Call Irving Azoff right now.”

Elsewhere during the show, Mayer was put through the usual WWHL ringer, like a game of “Fashion or Trash, Hun,” where Mayer bravely critiqued the various outfits he wore during the early 2000s. From an indie sleaze prep school look to multiple red carpet appearances wearing velvet jackets and jeans, Mayer was ruthless, trashing the vast majority of his fits (except a rather cozy-looking chunky sweater look).

By the end of the game, Mayer had come to the conclusion that “the tops are always going to be pretty stable, but we live in a very volatile world for pants.” That, of course, was the perfect set up for Cohen, who quipped: “The tops are stable, and the bottoms aren’t — that’s what they say!”

Mayer is set to kick off the second leg of his first-ever solo acoustic tour tonight, Oct. 3, at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The 17-date run will continue through the month, wrapping on Nov. 10 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The solo tour marks the first time in Mayer’s 20-year career that he’s hit the road without a backing band; each gig features full acoustic sets, plus performances on electric guitar and piano.
