Nothing says luxury quite like a good bathrobe. While a bathrobe (also known as a “housecoat” or “dressing gown”) used to be a transitional piece you threw on after finishing your bath or shower but before you got dressed, the best robes these days are appropriate for any time of day — or night.
The best bathrobes keep you warm and dry after you step out of the shower, but can keep you cozy while you’re cooking in the kitchen, or reading or watching TV in the family room. And while we don’t recommend wearing these robes out in public, there’s nothing wrong with donning a good bathrobe while stepping outside to fetch the mail or morning paper.
The equation for a good men’s robe accounts for shape, material, size, and function. Personal preferences regarding a robe’s roominess and hem and sleeve length vary, as does the value of absorbent cotton for post-shower versus a softer and fuzzier material comfortable for all-day lounging.
Non-negotiable features for a decent robe include an adjustable belt, and soft, quality material. Depending on your personal tastes, you may also find features like front pockets, hood, or interior closure major selling points.
What Are the Different Kinds of Bathrobes?
You divide bathrobes into two basic categories: warm and fuzzy, or light and practical.
Fuzzy: Plush robes are often made of some blend of coral fleece, which is soft, thick, and extremely warm. These robes also tend to run a bit large. If you want to be fully draped in softness (or engage in some Jedi cosplay) big and cozy is the way to go.
Lightweight: Look for 100 percent cotton, which is more breathable and absorbent than fleece, and is much lighter and thinner. These robes also tend to have a slimmer fit, with shorter hemlines and sleeve lengths. If you need a little more freedom of movement or simply run hot, you’ll want a lighter robe.
